Vince Kerr President
Vince Kerr is responsible for the leadership of ASA as we continue to grow and develop the business both in the UK and Internationally. His early career was in software development before he moved in to marketing, business development and strategy where he built a 20 year track record of successful international experience developing and growing businesses in the IT and Travel sectors including time at Fujitsu and British Airways where he led the creation of a Joint Venture between British Airways and ICL. He has spent 14 years in the IT services and solutions sector and from 2009 to 2011 was the Executive Director of Marketing for Fujitsu in the UK and Ireland. He subsequently ran his own consulting business and first started working with L3 ASA when he was engaged to help develop the company’s strategic growth plan in 2013. Vince holds a Bachelor of Science in Computing, Operational Research and Statistics, a Masters Degree in Business Administration, and was made a Fellow of the Marketing Society in 2011.
Brian Shand Vice President of Integrated Defence Systems
Brian leads the Integrated Defence Systems business unit with responsibility for the company’s Integrated Missile Defence and Space Situational Awareness sectors. He joined L3 ASA in 1997 and has worked on many aspects of the company’s data fusion and tracking projects including: project management, systems engineering, software development, system performance analysis, system integration, system test and customer support. Dr. Shand holds a Bachelor of Science in Physics from Exeter University and a PhD in Radio and Space Plasma Physics from Leicester University.
Ian Charles Business Unit Director – Communications and Intelligence Systems
Ian leads L3 ASA’s Communications and Intelligence Systems business unit. He joined L3 ASA in September 2008 to manage the UK Integrated Broadcast Service programme, prior to which he was responsible for the successful delivery of critical CIS programmes for the MoD at Abbey Wood. A qualified Mechanical and Electrical Engineer, Ian has extensive experience of successfully managing technical and non-technical teams in diverse environments.
Karen Saunders HR Director
Karen Saunders was appointed HR Director of L3 ASA in June 2014. Karen joined L3 ASA in March 2009 originally as Office Manager and Executive Assistant to the President and then taking on the role of H.R. Manager. Her career started at a cable installation company (GDC) where she progressed from Office Junior to setting up a sales team. Subsequent moves took her to a start up company (Integrated Systems), where she joined the sales team, selling fractal compression. Karen also held the position of Customer Order Management Supervisor at MicroFocus, a Software House. Prior to joining L3 ASA Karen worked in Telecommunications for Avaya as the EMEA Sales Operations Manager, supporting the sales teams to ensure they achieved sales targets and enhanced customer relationships. Her career has been focussed on people which made for a natural progression into Human Resources.
Chris Knapman Vice President of Business Development
Chris Knapman joined L3 ASA after a full career in the Royal Air Force, including leading the division responsible for the development of the UK’s Air Command & Control, Air Traffic Control, Space Operations and Missile Defence capabilities. As Vice President for Business Development at L3 ASA, Chris is responsible for the coordination of strategic planning and BD activity across the company. His role includes corporate communication and marketing and the management of relationships with new partners and allies.
Del Grice Finance Director
Del Grice was appointed Finance Director of L3 ASA in June 2014, and has overall responsibility for the company’s Finance, Accounting and Project Management Office functions. Del joined ASA in 1996 to establish the company’s Project Management Office and has over twenty years experience in Project Management & Support and Project Accounting. Prior to joining ASA, Del was involved in supporting numerous technical programmes within the defence and commercial security & fire detection industries in the Project Office of the Thorn EMI Electronics Group. Del’s involvement in the financial aspects of the acquisition of ASA by the L3 Communications Group in 2006 led to his transition into the wider finance area and subsequent appointment to Financial Controller and then to his current role.
Simon Hall Vice President of Engineering
Simon Hall joined ASA in 1989 from BAE’s Electronic Warfare group. He worked on ASA’s CASE Toolset (Auto-G), principally on Code Generation from the graphical notation and then became involved in adapting the MACH micro-kernel for use with the TOTS applications produced from the Auto-G models. With the move into communications systems Simon became the Chief Architect of the MultiSwitch family of applications, achieving the goal of producing a framework capable of working in both Commercial and Military domains with a high inherent availability. As VP Engineering, following ASA’s acquisition by L3, Simon now has responsibility for the methods, tools, and technologies used across the variety of L3 ASA’s Business domains.
Keith Hardy Vice President of Operations
Keith Hardy leads the company’s business support operations and is the company’s Ethics Officer – he coordinates work in progress including Quality Assurance, Security and Facilities. He has over 30 years experience in software engineering and project management and has led a number of the company’s most significant programmes particularly in the Communications area. Formerly Keith spent some 20 years at Ultra Electronics leading to appointments as Chief Software Engineer and Engineering Manager. Keith has wide experience spanning Defence, Maritime and commercial domains. He gained his BSc in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from Kingston University in 1983, is a Chartered Engineer and a Member of the Institution of Engineering and Technology.
Kevin Smith Engineering Director – Integrated Defence Systems
Kevin Smith is responsible for providing technical leadership and guidance for the IDS Business Unit and supporting the VP Engineering more widely. He joined ASA in 1994 and has a background in Systems and Software Engineering and Mathematics. His experience spans Integrated Missile Defence, Space Situational Awareness and Communications.
